Starting Out: A Factory Job in Columbus
Maria came to Ohio from Mexico as a young adult, looking for opportunity and stability. Like many new arrivals, she found her first job in manufacturing—working at a food processing plant on the city’s west side.
“I was grateful for steady work. The hours were long, but I was proud to help support my family,” Maria remembers.
For nearly a decade, she worked the production line, building strong friendships with coworkers and learning about Columbus’s diverse communities.
The Spark: Inspired to Make a Change
In 2020, the pandemic hit. Maria’s factory temporarily closed, and she found herself at home, caring for her children and elderly neighbor.
“I realized how much I liked helping people. I wanted to do work that made a difference—not just for my family, but for my community.”
That spark led Maria to wonder: Could she find a job where she helped people every day?
Taking the Leap: Returning to School
Maria’s first step was to visit her local OhioMeansJobs Center. There, a career counselor talked her through her options and suggested a short-term training program for State Tested Nursing Assistants (STNA) at Columbus State Community College.
“I was nervous about going back to school in my 30s, especially because English isn’t my first language. But the program was just a few months, and the college had support for adult learners and people like me.”
With financial aid and encouragement from her family, Maria enrolled. She balanced classes with a part-time job and parenting duties, often studying late at night.
Facing Challenges—and Finding Support
Maria’s journey wasn’t easy. Tests were stressful, and juggling family, work, and school left little time for herself. Some days, she doubted her decision.
But she leaned on her classmates—the program included several other adult learners. She asked for help from her instructors and used Columbus State’s free tutoring and language support.
“I learned you don’t have to do everything alone. There are people and resources here to help.”
Achieving Her Dream: A New Career in Healthcare
After passing her state exam, Maria was hired as an STNA at a local nursing home. Now, she spends her days caring for seniors—helping with meals, daily activities, and companionship.
“My job is hard, but it’s meaningful. Every day, I see the difference I make in someone’s life. I’m proud to show my children that you can always grow and change.”
Maria has plans to keep going: she’s taking online classes to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the future.
